Three drugs can cause women to stop menstruating early

The causes of amenorrhea can be said to be varied, which is why amenorrhea is a very common disease. Of course, physiological amenorrhea is normal. In addition to paying attention to organic amenorrhea and non-organic amenorrhea, we should also pay attention to other aspects, such as amenorrhea caused by drug factors. Below are some drugs that can cause amenorrhea:

1. Antihypertensive and sedative drugs

Some antihypertensive sedative drugs inhibit hypothalamic function and block the effect of dopamine, thereby relieving the inhibition of prolactin and increasing prolactin. Hyperprolactinemia in turn inhibits the secretion of pituitary gonadotropin and causes amenorrhea.

2. Adrenal cortex hormones

Some adrenal cortical hormones can inhibit the secretion of gonadotropin, and therefore often cause amenorrhea.

3. Contraceptive pills

Women taking birth control pills, especially long-acting birth control pills, may sometimes experience amenorrhea. The reason is that birth control pills have an excessive and continuous inhibitory effect on the hypothalamus-pituitary axis, which reduces the secretion of pituitary gonadotropin and increases the secretion of pituitary prolactin, thus causing amenorrhea and lactation.

However, this inhibition is often temporary, and menstruation can usually resume automatically after stopping the medication. Currently, low-dose contraceptives are widely used, and it is recommended that contraceptives be used alternately with other contraceptive measures such as condoms and contraceptive rings. This has little inhibitory effect on the hypothalamus-pituitary axis, so don't worry too much about taking contraceptives.

Generally speaking, the treatment of amenorrhea is not difficult, because in clinical practice, non-organic amenorrhea is the most common. This type of amenorrhea refers to amenorrhea that is not caused by disease. In treatment, it is generally based on eliminating the cause of the disease, supplemented by certain conditioning, then the patient can recover.
