What medicine should I take for functional uterine bleeding?

Functional uterine bleeding in modern medicine is called metrorrhagia in traditional Chinese medicine. Symptoms include prolonged menstruation, heavy bleeding, dark red or purple-black blood, hot palms and soles, sore waist and knees, red tongue, and stringy pulse. Most cases are caused by yin deficiency and blood heat, and can be treated with Gujing Pills.

[Composition] 8 grams each of Phellodendron chinense and Cyperus rotundus, 7 grams each of Scutellaria baicalensis and Chinese toon bark, 12 grams of White Peony Root, and 24 grams of Tortoise Shell.

[Usage] Add 800 ml of water to the above medicine, boil it until 300 ml remains, remove the residue, take the juice, and take it warm in several doses. Take 2 to 3 doses per day.

【Function】Nourishes yin, clears away heat, consolidates menstruation and stops bleeding.

[Explanation] The Phellodendron chinense in the prescription is cold in nature and bitter in taste. It has the functions of clearing away heat and drying dampness, purging fire and detoxifying, and removing fever and steaming. It can treat leucorrhea, stranguria, beriberi, diarrhea, jaundice, sores, swelling and pain, and eczema caused by damp-heat.

Wet sores, fever, night sweats, and spermatorrhea caused by yin deficiency; in this prescription, its function of purging fire and strengthening yin is used. Scutellaria baicalensis is cold in nature and bitter in taste. It has the functions of clearing heat and drying dampness, purging fire and detoxifying, cooling blood and stopping bleeding, removing heat and calming the fetus; it can treat damp-heat, summer dampness, damp-heat caused by stuffiness, jaundice, and diarrhea; lung heat cough, fever thirst, carbuncle swelling and sore throat, blood heat vomiting and bleeding, and fetal heat and restlessness; in this prescription, its function of clearing heat and stopping bleeding is used. Toona bark is cold in nature, bitter and astringent in taste. It has the functions of clearing heat and drying dampness, stopping leukorrhea and diarrhea, astringing and stopping bleeding; it can treat diarrhea caused by damp heat, chronic diarrhea and dysentery, leukorrhea, metrorrhagia, blood in stool and hemorrhoids; in this prescription, its function of consolidating menstruation and stopping bleeding is used. White peony root is slightly cold in nature, bitter, sour and sweet in taste, and can nourish blood and regulate menstruation, soothe the liver and relieve pain, and restrain yin and stop sweating. It can treat irregular menstruation and metrorrhagia caused by blood deficiency or yin deficiency with heat; liver yin deficiency, liver qi stagnation or liver yang hyperactivity; yin deficiency and night sweats and disharmony between Ying and Wei; in this prescription, it is used to nourish the liver by restraining yin and replenishing blood. Turtle shell is cold in nature, sweet and salty in taste, and can nourish yin and suppress yang, benefit the kidney and strengthen bones, consolidate menstruation and stop bleeding, and nourish blood and nourish the heart; it can treat yin deficiency and internal heat, yin deficiency and yang hyperactivity; fever yin deficiency and wind movement syndrome; bone atrophy caused by kidney deficiency, malhesion of fontanelles in children; yin deficiency and blood heat, metrorrhagia and menorrhagia caused by Chong and Ren meridians not being solid; in this prescription, it is used to nourish the kidney, nourish yin, reduce fire and stop bleeding. Cyperus rotundus is neutral in nature, pungent, slightly bitter and slightly sweet in taste, and has the functions of soothing the liver and regulating qi, regulating menstruation and relieving pain; it can treat flank pain and abdominal pain caused by qi stagnation; irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea and breast pain caused by liver depression; in this prescription, it is used for its function of regulating qi and activating blood circulation. The combination of these herbs can nourish yin, clear away heat and stop bleeding.

【Notes】① Scutellaria baicalensis, bitter and cold, hurts the stomach, not suitable for people with spleen and stomach deficiency and cold. ② Phellodendron chinense, easily hurts the stomach qi, not suitable for people with spleen and stomach deficiency and cold. ③ Toona sinensis bark, use with caution for people with spleen and stomach deficiency and cold. ④ White peony root, cannot be used with Veratrum.
