How to choose various surgical methods for uterine fibroids

Surgery is a traditional and effective method for treating uterine fibroids, and there are several surgical options.

1. Myomectomy

Myomectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the fibroids while preserving the uterus. After the operation, the patient can have normal menstruation, and the operation has little effect on fertility. It is an ideal method for surgical treatment of uterine fibroids. However, since fibroids are often multiple, if the uterus is preserved, the possibility of postoperative recurrence will increase. Many patients have new fibroid nodules 2 to 3 months after the operation. However, this procedure is still recommended for women under 40 years old or who have fertility requirements.

2. Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy is relative to myomectomy, and mainly includes two types: subtotal hysterectomy and total hysterectomy.

(1) Subtotal hysterectomy: Subtotal hysterectomy means that the entire uterus is removed while preserving the cervix. This procedure is relatively simple and causes less damage, but the cervix must be examined before surgery to rule out the possibility of precancerous lesions. Otherwise, if the retained cervical tissue becomes malignant, the difficulty of the next surgery will be greatly increased and it will cause greater harm to the patient's health.

(2) Radical hysterectomy: Radical hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the entire uterus is removed. It is suitable for patients who are close to menopause or have severe cervical inflammation. It can fundamentally cut off the damage caused by the disease and the risk of cancer.
