Causes of secondary ectopic pregnancy in the abdominal cavity

Ectopic pregnancy in the abdominal cavity is a rare but most serious ectopic pregnancy. Most abdominal pregnancies are secondary to abortion or rupture of tubal pregnancy. The products of pregnancy fall into the abdominal cavity and implant on the peritoneum or the surface of other organs, where they continue to grow and develop. The incidence of abdominal pregnancy is related to the incidence of tubal pregnancy.

In secondary abdominal pregnancy, the original fertilized egg can be implanted in the fallopian tube, ovary or uterus. When it is implanted in the uterus, it is often believed to be caused by rupture due to defects in the uterus, such as poor scar healing after cesarean section or cesarean section, uterine peritoneal fistula, spontaneous rupture of uterine diverticulum or basal angle, poor development and rupture of uterine wall, etc. The pregnancy products squeeze into the abdominal cavity from the rupture and continue to grow and develop, resulting in abdominal pregnancy.

Secondary abdominal pregnancy mostly occurs after rupture of tubal pregnancy or miscarriage. The pregnancy product comes out of the ruptured part or the fimbria, but part of it is still attached to the affected part. The villi of the implantation part survive and continue to develop by attaching to the nearby peritoneum or organs, thus becoming an abdominal pregnancy. A few cases occur after rupture of ovarian ectopic pregnancy. For those who have had a cesarean section and then become pregnant again, the cesarean section incision ruptures and the fetus swims out of the abdomen. Or uterine incisions due to other reasons, uterine-abdominal fistulas, etc. can also cause rare abdominal pregnancy.
