What are the causes of dysmenorrhea?

Dysmenorrhea refers to cramping pain in the lower abdomen before, during, or after menstruation, as well as general discomfort that seriously affects daily life. There are two types of dysmenorrhea: primary and secondary. What are the symptoms of dysmenorrhea?

(1) Symptoms of dysmenorrhea: Qi stagnation and blood stasis type. Symptoms include abdominal distension and pain one or two days before menstruation or during menstruation, which is resistant to pressure, or accompanied by chest and breast distension, or scanty menstruation, or menstrual flow is scanty, or menstruation is not smooth, the menstrual blood is dark purple with clots, the pain is relieved after the blood clots are discharged, and the pain disappears after the menstruation is over, the tongue is dark purple or has petechiae, and the pulse is stringy or slippery. Treatment should be to regulate qi, remove blood stasis and relieve pain.

(2) Symptoms of dysmenorrhea: Cold-dampness stagnation type, symptoms include cold pain in the lower abdomen a few days before or during menstruation, pain relieved by heat, severe pain when pressed, scanty menstrual flow, dark menstrual blood with clots, or fear of cold and body pain, greasy white tongue coating, and deep and tight pulse. Treatment should be to warm the meridians, dispel cold and dampness, and resolve blood stasis and relieve pain.

(3) Symptoms of dysmenorrhea: Qi and blood deficiency type, symptoms include dull pain in the lower abdomen one or two days after menstruation or during menstruation, or a hollow feeling in the lower abdomen and genitals, a preference for massage, scanty menstruation, light color and thin texture, or fatigue, or a sallow complexion, or poor appetite and loose stools, pale tongue, and a thin and weak pulse. Treatment should be to replenish qi, blood and relieve pain.

(4) Symptoms of dysmenorrhea: Damp-heat descending type, symptoms include lower abdominal pain before menstruation, refusing to be pressed, burning sensation, or accompanied by lumbar pain; lower abdominal pain at other times, which is aggravated during menstruation. Low-grade fever fluctuates, dark red menstrual blood, thick and clotted, thick yellow vaginal discharge, short and yellow urine, red tongue, yellow and greasy coating, and stringy or weak pulse.
