How to diagnose vulvar leukoplakia?

Did you know that leukoplakia of the vulva has been reported in women during childhood, adolescence, menopause and old age , with most cases occurring in menopause around the age of 50. The course of the disease varies , with the elderly lasting for decades and can occur at any age .

Although the manifestations of leukoplakia vulvae in women are different , they are not easy to distinguish with the naked eye . Even if the naked eye can diagnose , pathological typing cannot be achieved , especially atypical hyperplasia ( precancerous lesions ) cannot be found early. According to literature reports , about 50% of vulvar squamous cell carcinomas are often accompanied by vulvar white lesions . Therefore, if the lesions are atypical or there are chronic chapped skin, localized thickening, and ulceration , biopsy pathology must be relied on for diagnosis . When taking samples , it is necessary to take samples from multiple points such as ulcers, chapped skin, nodules, protrusions or rough areas , and the samples should be taken appropriately . Method : 1% toluidine blue can be applied to the lesion area first , and after it dries , 1% acetic acid solution can be used for decolorization . In the non-decolorized area, biopsy forceps are used perpendicular to the skin and deep into the dermis for biopsy . Any non-decolorized area indicates that there are naked nuclei in the area , suggesting that biopsy in this area can improve the accuracy of diagnosis .
