What causes cervicitis?

The causes of cervicitis may be related to a variety of factors such as infection, changes in hormone levels and external stimuli, including common pathogenic microorganism infection, poor hygiene habits and abnormal hormone or immune function.

The most common cause of cervicitis is infection with pathogenic microorganisms, such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, herpes simplex virus or human papillomavirus (HPV). Damage to the cervical mucosa caused by sexual transmission, childbirth or surgery provides an opportunity for these pathogens to invade. Poor personal hygiene habits can also increase the risk of disease, such as not paying attention to hygiene during menstruation or excessive use of vaginal cleansing products, which may destroy the natural barrier function of the cervix and vagina. Changes in hormone levels (such as decreased estrogen) may lead to a weakening of the cervical defense function, making it more susceptible to infection. Some people with poor immune function are also more likely to suffer from chronic cervicitis, such as diabetics or people who take immunosuppressants for a long time.

To prevent and treat cervicitis, first of all, you should pay attention to maintaining good personal hygiene, especially during menstruation and sexual intercourse. Regular gynecological examinations are key to detecting problems as early as possible, especially for women of childbearing age and those with multiple partners. If cervicitis is diagnosed, treatment can be given according to the specific cause. For example, infectious cervicitis can be treated with antibiotics (such as cephalosporins or azithromycin), antiviral drugs (such as acyclovir), or antifungal drugs (such as clotrimazole). If the inflammation is severe, physical therapy (such as cryotherapy or laser treatment) may be required to promote the repair of diseased tissue. It is also recommended to enhance immunity, such as supplementing vitamin C or E, eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, and maintaining a regular schedule to avoid excessive fatigue.
