A male businessman likes to drink hand-shaken drinks with bread, which causes his blood sugar to soar! Prediabetes comes to you

If you like to drink hand-shaken drinks with bread for a long time, be careful that your blood sugar will soar and become prediabetes, which may worsen into diabetes in the future! Mr. Pan, 42 years old, often has to go out to run business and visit clients due to the nature of his work. For him, the most convenient way to solve three meals a day is to have a hand-shaken drink with bread that is quickly available and easy to eat. Mr. Pan also said that there are many flavors of hand-shaken drinks and bread to choose from, so you won’t get tired of eating them three times a day. When you feel a little stressed, you can have some sweet bread or the exquisite pastries sold in the bakery.

The patient recently came to Beitou Health Management Hospital to arrange a health check-up. His fasting blood sugar level had reached 95mg/dl and his glycosylated hemoglobin was 5.2%. Although these values were still within the normal range and had not yet reached the level of diabetes diagnosis, they were in fact already in the pre-diabetes range. (According to the latest blood sugar standards, normal fasting blood sugar should be below 100 mg/dl, and normal glycosylated hemoglobin should be below 5.7%.)

Bread is a refined starch, so be careful with sugary hand-shaken drinks that contain too much refined sugar

After arranging for a nutritionist to provide nutritional consultation, he suddenly discovered that the eating habits he had always believed to be convenient and simple might cause damage to his health in the future. Nutritionist Pan Fuzi from Beitou Health Management Hospital explained that bread is a refined starch and sugary shaken drinks can easily lead to excessive intake of refined sugars. One needs to pay attention to the amount of food consumed, and emphasized that a proper diet is definitely not just about eating enough.

In particular, type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% of diabetes. The main cause behind it is eating too much refined food and having no exercise habits, which causes the body's daily calorie intake to be far higher than consumption, leading to problems with the body's insulin metabolism, thus causing diabetes.

The prevalence of prediabetes is about 25%, and 1 in 4 people are at high risk of developing diabetes

According to the Survey on Changes in the National Nutrition and Health Status from 2017 to 2020, the prevalence of prediabetes (fasting blood glucose levels between 100-125 mg/dL) among Chinese people aged 18 and above is about 25%, which means that one in every four people is at high risk of developing diabetes. In addition, the survey results also show that among the high-risk group, 66% have excessive waist circumference, 65% are overweight or obese, and 5-10% of the obese people will develop diabetes, and the risk of cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease will also increase.

Nutritionist Pan Fuzi also shared that she had seen many cases where people were found to have high blood sugar levels only after a health check-up. The reason for this is that diabetes does not have particularly obvious symptoms in the early stages, making it difficult to detect that they have diabetes. In addition to adhering to the "three less and one high" dietary principle of less oil, less salt, less sugar and high fiber, you also need to pay attention to waist circumference and weight. The waist circumference of adult men should be kept below 90 cm, and the waist circumference of women should be kept below 80 cm, and 150 minutes of physical activity should be accumulated per week.

Symptoms of diabetes are usually difficult to detect. It is recommended to observe changes in blood sugar levels through health checks. If diabetes problems are discovered early, they can be effectively controlled through medication, diet control and exercise. Even early intervention and improvement in the pre-diabetes stage may reverse pre-diabetes, block the onset of diabetes, and maintain a better quality of life in the future.
