Obesity can damage the kidneys ~ 7 tips for children to lose weight and avoid chronic kidney disease

The problem of childhood obesity in China is becoming increasingly serious, even causing concerns about the rapid growth of chronic kidney disease. Doctors point out that obesity is an accomplice in kidney damage, and suggest that obese children should start with the three rules of regular exercise, healthy diet, and weight control to reduce the burden on the kidneys, prevent or slow the progression of kidney disease, and stay away from the shadow of lifelong dialysis.

Dr. Zhou Shuoqu from the Department of Family Medicine at Shuang He Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare pointed out that kidney disease ranks ninth among the top ten causes of death in the country, claiming more than 4,700 lives each year. According to the latest survey by the National Health Administration, one in 10 people over the age of 20 suffers from chronic kidney disease; and 200,000 children under the age of 15 suffer from chronic kidney disease, and the majority of them are obese.

Causes of chronic kidney disease in children and adults are different

An analysis of the main causes of chronic kidney disease in children shows that up to 50% are congenital kidney and urinary tract abnormalities, 40% are glomerulonephritis, and 10% are congenital metabolic abnormalities or genetic diseases. This is very different from the main causes of chronic kidney disease in adults, which are mostly diabetic nephropathy, glomerulonephritis or hypertension.

It is worth noting that there are many types of high-risk groups for chronic kidney disease in children, the most important of which is still congenital urinary tract abnormalities. The most common ones include: severe hydronephrosis or obstructive hydronephrosis, single kidney or incomplete kidney, vesicoureteral urine reflux, polycystic kidney dysplasia, family history of hereditary kidney disease, etc.

5 tips to stay away from symptoms of chronic kidney disease

Doctor Zhou Shuoqu emphasized that kidney disease is a progressive disease. The symptoms are unclear at the beginning and can be easily ignored. Therefore, we especially call on obese children to control their weight, eat a balanced diet, exercise more, and also master the five symptoms on a daily basis to remind themselves to stay away from chronic kidney disease.

  • 1. Foamy urine: Foamy urine refers to abnormal urine, such as hematuria and protein foamy urine.

  • 2. Water: Edema: There is edema in the lower limbs, and the depression produced after pressing cannot recover immediately.

  • 3. High: high blood pressure.

  • 4. Anemia: anemia and pale complexion.

  • 5. Tired: tired.

Dr. Zhou Shuoqu reminds that a high-protein, high-calorie diet can cause obesity, high blood lipids, high blood sugar, and even high blood pressure and metabolic imbalance in children, and can easily produce proteinuria and cause kidney disease. Here are 7 tips to help you beat childhood obesity:

1. "Say no to sugar, boiled water is best": encourage drinking more boiled water instead of sugary drinks.

2. "Warm meals together, family health": Encourage "eating with children" and "preparing meals for children". This not only takes care of the health of the whole family, but also promotes parent-child relationships.

3. "Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and eat a balanced diet": Encourage children to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh milk, nuts, brown rice, etc., to cultivate a balanced diet and avoid picky eating.

4. "Refuse snacks and stay away from high calories": Avoid foods such as potato chips, fried chicken, fast food, etc. that are high in oil, salt, and calories and can easily cause obesity.

5. "Exercise more and reduce sitting time": Reduce the time children spend sitting using computers, mobile phones, and watching TV. It is recommended to accumulate 60 minutes of moderate to heavy physical activity every day.

6. "Mobilize the whole family and go outdoors": Parents are advised to plan parent-child activities for the whole family during the holidays, make good use of the sports maps and parent-child activity spaces planned by the National Health Administration in various counties and cities, and make more use of the walking trails and bicycle lanes opened to bring children close to nature and engage in physical activities.

7. "Proper rest and adequate sleep": Encourage children to develop regular living habits, avoid going to bed late and staying up late, and sleep at least 6-8 hours a day.
