"Preventive Medicine" recently published the latest publication from the University of Essex in the UK. The research team found that compared with non-unemployed people, unemployed people are more likely to be lighter than the average person, or even to be underweight. In the study, the authors used data from the Understanding Society (UKHLS) database to analyze body mass index (BMI) data of 10,737 working-age adults between 2010 and 2012. The experimental results found that the proportion of underweight (body mass index below 18.5) among the non-unemployed subjects who were employed, full-time parents or receiving full-time education was 0.7%, while the proportion of underweight among the unemployed subjects was 4%, which was significantly higher. Even if the authors exclude possible influencing factors such as education level, gender, and smoking habits, the proportion of underweight people in the unemployed group is still nearly 4 times higher than that of the non-unemployed group. The authors said that based on the research results, relevant departments should pay attention to the increased risk of death among unemployed people due to being underweight. The study was published in Preventive Medicine, Volume 97, Pages 19-25 This article is from ELSEVIER Global Pharmaceutical News |
