How much do you know about whether your child is fat or thin? The key to healthy kid development

How much do you know about whether your child is fat or thin? The key to healthy kid development

Childhood obesity is not a blessing, and "being fat in childhood is not considered fat" is even more of a misconception! The problem of childhood obesity has become a modern civilization disease. If it is not taken seriously and left unchecked, the risk of it developing into a chronic disease in the future will greatly increase, and it may even increase the chance of death. Parents and schools should pay special attention to this! Therefore, Sanshang Smith Barney Life Insurance and the Tung Foundation started from "health risk management" and cognitive education to promote the "Three Joys Boy Development Program", hoping that through family, school and health risk management, with simple assessment methods and codes of conduct, every student can become a "Three Joys Boy".

In order to promote the physical and mental health of children and adolescents, Sanshang Meibang Life Insurance continues to promote various sports activities. It organizes and supports various events such as the Sanshang Meibang Life Insurance Cup Teeball National Baseball Championship, Taiwan Children's Golf Championships and High School Basketball League, and has undertaken the national school insurance business for three consecutive years to protect the health of schoolchildren. This year we hope to take it to the next level by promoting the "Three Joys Kids Development Program" in both families and schools to cultivate children who enjoy eating, moving and living.

26% of school children have unsatisfactory waist-to-height ratio and fail the three-joy index

In order to care about the problem of childhood obesity in Taiwan, Sanshang Meibang Life Insurance and the Tung Foundation conducted a survey on the "Healthy Body Position and Lifestyle of Elementary School Children in Taiwan" and found that children of the same age, gender, height, and weight have very different waist circumferences, with a maximum difference of 11 centimeters! At the same time, it was also found that nearly 30% of school children's "waist-to-height ratio" is greater than the recommended value of 0.5! The abdominal fat that causes the difference in waist circumference is the culprit for schoolchildren’s obesity and chronic diseases when they grow up!

In addition, the survey also found that 33% of students failed because their "three joy indexes" (joy of eating, joy of moving, and joy of living) were below 60 points. Therefore, San Shang Mei Bang and the Tung Foundation call on parents across the country to face up to the common health risks and myths of school children, and share the "Three Joys" principle of happy eating, happy moving, and happy living. In addition to the traditional BMI (body mass index), waist circumference should be measured. By calculating the "waist-to-height ratio (WHtR)" and the "Three Joys Index" (happy eating, happy moving, and happy living), children's health can be managed from an early age!

【Pay attention to the three happiness indexes to take care of children's health】:

Happy Food: Implementing the principles of a balanced diet pyramid

The so-called "happy eating" should be taught in accordance with the "Balanced Diet Pyramid" for eating habits, and it is recommended to be carried out in the form of fun games, that is, through the concept of "healthy eating", the six major types of food are represented by graphics, and the pyramid's wide bottom and narrow top shape is used to remind children of the need for various types of food in their daily diet. The above interactive games can be used in parent-child dining situations, and combined with children's diet records and tracking, to easily implement the "happy eating principle."

Exercise: At least 120 minutes of exercise per week

Apart from physical education classes at school, children either stare in front of the TV when they get home, or are sent to after-school care classes to do homework. They have almost no extra time for exercise, and if they don’t get enough exercise, obesity will follow. Parents should guide their children to exercise by leading and accompanying them, encourage them to develop an interest in sports, foster group interaction and interpersonal relationships through group exercise, and ensure that they exercise for at least 120 minutes per week.

Lohas: Parents and children practice Lohas together

Some parents have the wrong idea that "a child who is strong is not fat, and being fat when young is not fat". In fact, if children are obese when they are young, they are likely to be obese when they grow up. Obesity is a killer of chronic diseases. If parents do not help their children control their weight, in addition to the risk of chronic diseases, it will also lead to cardiovascular diseases and even increase the risk of death. Parents should set a good example and lead their children to practice a healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a normal daily routine, eating at home, setting aside regular family leisure time, and developing good sleeping habits.
