Hot summer iced coffee mines: one cup is equal to two bowls of rice

In the hot summer, people stay in air-conditioned rooms to escape the heat, and have a cup of iced coffee after lunch to quench their thirst and refresh themselves. However, the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) reminds people that commercially available iced coffee contains a lot of milk foam and fructose. Although it quenches the body's thirst, it can also cause fat in the belly if you are not careful. According to the survey, the popular freshly brewed coffee has an average calorie content of 450 calories, and some even exceed 560 calories. If we calculate it based on a bowl of rice with 280 calories, it is equivalent to the amount of two bowls.

According to a survey conducted by the World Cancer Research Fund on most well-known coffee chains in the UK, a single cup of iced coffee contains more than 561 calories, which is equivalent to two bowls of rice; other freshly brewed coffees have an average of 450 calories. If you drink two cups a day plus three meals and snacks, it is not difficult to break the weight limit.

3 steps to drink coffee wisely

In addition to the hidden calories that will burden the body, the main ingredients of creamer in coffee are hydrogenated vegetable oil, corn syrup, casein, spices, food coloring, etc., and it does not contain milk ingredients. Therefore, it does not need to be refrigerated for storage. However, the trans fatty acids hidden in it may become a health killer, increase the bad cholesterol content, and cause cardiovascular burden.

Dr. Rachel Thompson of the World Cancer Research Fund pointed out that it is recommended to choose unsweetened coffee made with skimmed or semi-skimmed milk to help reduce calorie intake. Usually you can start from 3 directions:

  1. Less additives in coffee: Use low-fat milk or skim milk instead of creamer. No need to add sugar. It tastes rich and healthy.

  2. Limit one cup a day: An average 150cc cup of coffee contains 100 mg of caffeine. It is recommended that caffeine intake should be less than 300 mg a day.

  3. Drink at the right time: avoid drinking on an empty stomach. Since coffee can stimulate the secretion of gastric acid, drinking coffee on an empty stomach for a long time can easily damage the gastric mucosa.

Huang Yunzhen, a nutritionist at the Songde branch of Taipei City United Hospital, added that the trap of iced coffee is just like the popular hand-shaken drinks in the summer. The more additives there are and the sweeter the taste, the higher the calories will be. In addition to not drinking too much every day, you can try changing the taste and replacing it with completely additive-free black coffee to drink more healthily.
