Chinese medicine health care focuses on the "spleen and kidneys". The innate foundation lies in kidney qi, while the acquired care lies in the spleen. Simply put, the genes our parents give us are innate, but how we eat affects our physical condition.

According to TCM theory, "water and dampness" and "phlegm and fluid" are both causes of metabolic disorders. If water and dampness remain in the skin, it will cause edema, while phlegm and fluid are caused by the failure of water and dampness to transform in the body. Recently, a patient told me a real case. He said that his friend used to weigh over 90 kilograms, but after not seeing him for half a year, he lost more than ten kilograms, and no longer looked sickly, but looked radiant.

It turned out that the friend simply changed his eating habits and added red beans and coix seeds to rice for half a year. Unknowingly, he became thinner and thinner. In a case like this, it is definitely edema-type obesity, and red beans and coix seeds can both promote diuresis, remove moisture from the stomach and intestines, and restore the digestive function to normal.   1. Massage: Four seam points

    • How to find: The midpoint of the interphalangeal joints of the index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and little finger, close to the base of the palm.

    • How to press: The mother extends her thumb and presses from the child's index finger to the little finger, massaging each finger for 30 seconds, and massaging back and forth 3 to 5 times.

    • When to use: Children who often eat greasy and sweet food can easily damage their spleen and stomach and lead to developmental problems. At this time, press a group of four points on the palms of both hands more often, which can eliminate stagnation, strengthen the spleen and stomach, increase digestive activity, and improve digestive function.

  2. Massage: Yinlingquan acupoint

    • How to find it: On the inner side of the tibia, next to the inner bend of the lower back edge of the knee.

    • How to press: You can use your thumb or the tip of a ballpoint pen to massage, mainly pressing until you feel a sore and swollen feeling. Massage 3 times a day, each time for about 5 to 10 minutes.

    • When to use: This is an acupoint suitable for both mothers and children. It can not only fight edema, but is also effective in treating symptoms such as diarrhea in children and menstrual pain in mothers.

  3. Food and nutrition: Eliminate stagnation tea

    • Ingredients: 5g hawthorn, 3g tangerine peel, a little rock sugar, about 700cc water

    • Method: Wash the herbs and put them into boiling water, then simmer for 5 to 7 minutes on low heat. Add rock sugar and stir, then turn off the heat and simmer for another 5 minutes.

    • Tips: This tea is suitable for children who eat too much or too fast at each meal and often complain of bloating and discomfort. Parents can prepare this tea for their children to relieve the discomfort caused by food accumulation in the stomach.

  4. Diet: Barley and red bean dehumidifying porridge

    • Ingredients: half a bowl of red beans, half a bowl of coix seeds, half a bowl of white or brown rice, 4 to 5 bowls of water.

    • Method: Wash the ingredients and soak them for 3 hours, then put them into the rice cooker to cook. You can also soak them the day before, put them in the refrigerator, and then put them into the pot to cook in the morning.

    • Tips: This porridge is especially suitable for moms with "edema-type obesity" who feel slightly swollen on the face or around the eyes when they wake up in the morning, and often feel swollen and uncomfortable in the lower limbs in the afternoon. If you want to enhance the dehumidification effect in the body when cooking, remember not to add sugar or salt.

Another special reminder is that if the mother is pregnant, do not eat too much coix seed. Red beans alone can also have an effect.
