Why can’t we have midnight snacks? Be careful of the fat

Late-night snacking is undoubtedly a bad habit, but why is it so bad? A study from Vanderbilt University in the United States pointed out that eating late at night is likely to disrupt the biological clock and damage the body's metabolic mechanism; after digestion, food is converted into fat and stored, which not only leads to obesity, but also makes it more likely to suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes.

Movie night with potato chips? You’ll get fat!

Chronobiologist Carl Johnson said, "What you eat is important, but when you eat is even more important." When taking the same food, calories will be converted into immediately available energy during the day and stored as fat at night. The research team conducted experiments on mice, which are nocturnal animals and normally eat at night. The results showed that if mice eat randomly during the day, they will most likely grow fat.

Johnson said that when mice do not eat normally during the day, the insulin in their bodies cannot work effectively, and the body tissues will not consume the sugar in the blood as energy. If they are placed under weak red light that simulates sunlight, the insulin resistance becomes more obvious, leading to more fat accumulation.

Experiments have shown that insulin in animals is affected by the circadian rhythm and undergoes dynamic changes within a day. Johnson said that if you want to have a midnight snack, it is better to get up early and have breakfast.
