Eat less of the five types of plump autumn crabs

Recently, we can see promotional advertisements such as "Hairy Crabs Are Coming" and "Autumn Crabs Are Fat and Lush" everywhere, which makes people salivate. Autumn is a good time to eat crabs, but crabs are cold in nature and crab roe contains cholesterol. Some people are not suitable for excessive consumption, especially those with cardiovascular diseases. They should be more careful to avoid harm from their mouths!

Because crabs are "cold in nature", they are not suitable for everyone. There are five major groups that should not eat crabs excessively. (Photography by Huang Manying)

Crabs are delicious and nutritious. Not only are they high in protein and unsaturated fatty acids, they also contain trace elements and vitamins needed by the human body, such as calcium, phosphorus, iron and vitamin A. In addition, their meat is tender and delicious. Eating them in moderation is beneficial to human health.

However, crabs are not suitable for everyone because of their "cold nature". The following are five groups that should not eat crabs excessively:

  1. People who are prone to diarrhea should not eat crabs: crabs are cold in nature and eating them can easily cause abdominal pain, diarrhea or indigestion. Patients with chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers should not eat crabs, because eating crabs can easily cause the old disease to relapse or worsen.

  2. Cardiovascular patients should avoid eating crabs: Crabs have a relatively high cholesterol content. Therefore, people with cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, heart disease, arteriosclerosis, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and liver disease should eat less or no crab meat.

  3. Hepatitis patients should not eat crabs: Hepatitis patients have gastric mucosal edema, abnormal bile secretion, and decreased digestive function, while crab meat is rich in protein and difficult to digest and absorb, which often causes indigestion, abdominal distension, vomiting, etc.

  4. People with allergies should avoid eating crabs: People who are allergic to seafood should not eat crabs, because crab protein will increase allergic reactions, produce large amounts of histamine, cause gastrointestinal smooth muscle spasms, angioedema, and cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea; some may also cause urticaria or asthma. In addition, people with skin diseases such as dermatitis, eczema, and ringworm should also eat crabs with caution, because eating crabs can make their condition worse.

  5. Pregnant women should avoid eating crabs: Traditional Chinese medicine believes that crabs are cold in nature and have the effect of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, so they are not good for pregnant women. In fact, pregnant mothers should try to avoid eating unheated foods such as sashimi and snail meat, or many aquatic products that have the effect of promoting blood circulation and softening hard masses, which may have adverse effects on early pregnancy after consumption, such as crabs, turtles, kelp, etc.
