Magnesium deficiency is common among Taiwanese diabetics

Regarding the research on the correlation between magnesium and diabetes, Huang Ruihua, a doctoral candidate in food nutrition at Fu Jen Catholic University, said that the causes of type 2 diabetes include inactivity, westernized diet, obesity, aging, etc., which may cause complications such as eye lesions, foot lesions, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, mental illness, and hearing loss. Magnesium supplementation can improve insulin sensitivity in diabetic patients, reduce total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein in the blood, increase high-density lipoprotein, and also improve depression in elderly diabetic patients.

Doctoral candidate Huang Ruihua conducted a study on 210 elderly diabetic patients in remote areas of central Taiwan, with an average age of 73 and an average duration of diabetes for 10 years. The study showed that 89% of elderly diabetic patients in Taiwan did not meet the daily magnesium intake standard, and the prevalence of hypomagnesemia was about 37%. This result may worsen metabolic abnormalities and depressive symptoms. Therefore, clinical care should pay attention to increasing dietary magnesium intake to improve metabolic control or depression.

In addition, Taiwan Deep Ocean Water Company once commissioned the Institute of Basic Medicine of China Medical University to use deep ocean water to prevent diabetes-induced cardiomyopathy. It can also be observed from animal experiments that the survival rate of diabetic mice can be significantly improved after taking deep ocean water for one month. The main reason for the improvement in survival rate is that it can reduce the complications caused by abnormal high blood sugar. It can be clearly seen from the analysis results of in vivo cardiac ultrasound that supplementation with deep ocean water can help maintain the normal contractile function of the heart, reduce the risk of heart abnormalities, and is also significantly helpful in inhibiting myocardial hypertrophy. Many results have pointed out that deep ocean water has a health function for the prevention of diabetes.
