The Legislative Yuan will hold an additional extraordinary meeting on the 20th to review the US beef case

Legislative Yuan Speaker Wang Jin-pyng convened government-opposition consultations this morning on the 18th and confirmed that a talk session will be held on the morning of the 20th and an extraordinary meeting will be held in the afternoon. The extraordinary meeting is expected to end on Thursday. The Executive Yuan also promised that under the terms of the extraordinary meeting to deal with the amendment of the Food Sanitation Management Act, it will not use administrative orders to open up imports of American beef containing the lean meat stimulant "ractopamine".

The current session of the Legislative Yuan was adjourned last Friday. The amendment to the Esophageal Act, which is related to American beef with ractopamine, could not proceed smoothly due to the boycott of the opposition party. President Ma Ying-jeou recently expressed his support for the Legislative Yuan to hold an extraordinary session to deal with the relevant amendments. The Kuomintang caucus completed the joint signature of the extraordinary meeting proposal today. After consultations between the ruling and opposition parties in the morning, it was confirmed that an extraordinary session will be held on the 20th.

The Executive Yuan stated that the dispute over U.S. beef can be resolved legally through administrative orders. However, due to the resolution of the Legislative Yuan on February 24, the ruling and opposition parties required the Executive Yuan not to directly release U.S. beef with ractopamine by administrative order in the near future before the amendment to the U.S. beef law is passed. Out of respect for this resolution, it is hoped that the Legislative Yuan's extraordinary session will give priority to handling this bill.
