First of all, it must be emphasized that the purpose of weight loss surgery is not to have a slim figure, but to make the body healthier by losing weight.

Obesity means that there is too much fat accumulated in the body. If it is not controlled, it is easy to develop "metabolic syndrome".

What is obesity?

Obesity usually refers to excessive accumulation of fat in the body. Because everyone's height is different, it is inaccurate to measure it simply by weight. Therefore, most people currently use the body mass index (BMI) to assess whether a person is overweight. The calculation method of body mass index is BMI = weight (kg) ÷ [height (m) × height (m)]

The healthiest BMI value is 22. Over 23 indicates overweight, over 27 indicates obesity, over 35 indicates severe obesity, and a BMI of over 40 indicates morbid obesity. A person with a BMI of 40 means that he is 160 cm tall and weighs 100 kg.

The problems caused by obesity are not just the impact on body shape. According to the National Health Administration, lack of exercise, high-fat diet, obesity and other problems can easily lead to "metabolic syndrome." The so-called metabolic syndrome refers to the clustering of a group of metabolic risk factors, such as hypertension, hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. When people have metabolic syndrome, their chances of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, heart disease and stroke are at least twice as high as those of the general population. The diseases derived from this account for five of the top 10 causes of death in my country, with a total mortality rate of 31%, even higher than that of malignant tumors, which are the top causes. In addition, obesity can also cause sleep apnea, degenerative arthritis, excessive uric acid, acid reflux and other problems that affect the quality of life.

Types of obesity

Obesity can be roughly divided into primary obesity and secondary obesity. There is no specific cause for primary obesity, which is mostly caused by overeating and lack of exercise. Secondary obesity has other physiological causes, such as endocrine diseases, bulimia caused by mental illness, or other genetic diseases. Secondary obesity usually requires treatment of its original cause. When the cause is improved, weight loss will occur.

Why lose weight?

Most of the complications caused by obesity can be improved after the patient loses weight successfully. For example, chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which are currently considered incurable, will be easier to control after the patient loses weight successfully. Under certain conditions, diabetic patients may no longer need to use blood sugar drugs to control their blood sugar. In addition, many papers have confirmed that after successful weight loss, the quality of life will improve, and self-identity and social life will also show significant improvements.

How to lose weight

The principle of weight loss is to consume fewer calories than you burn. There are many ways to lose weight, including medication, diet, exercise and surgery. Dieting does not mean fasting, but reducing calorie intake while taking in enough nutrients. You can plan your diet based on calories, and meal replacement is a more convenient choice because it has balanced nutrition, high fiber and low calories. It can replace one or two meals a day. However, meal replacement must be done under the guidance of professionals to avoid harm.
