Can't control your appetite? Gastric balloon surgery is a good choice

In order to reduce gastric content and the feeling of emptying to achieve weight loss, gastric balloon surgery has been introduced many years ago. Clinical studies at home and abroad have found that for adolescents who are not suitable for surgery, intragastric balloon surgery is a safer and more effective way to lose weight.

Gastric balloon surgery is a procedure that involves placing a silicone balloon into the stomach through the esophagus under endoscopic monitoring to achieve a weight loss effect with a feeling of fullness. (Photo provided by Peking University Hospital)

Director Wang Wei of the Weight Management Center of the Peking University Hospital said that gastric balloon surgery is performed under endoscopic monitoring. A silicone balloon is placed into the stomach through the esophagus, and then 400 to 700 CC of normal saline containing methylene blue is injected. The entire operation takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

When the gastric balloon is first inserted, the patient will feel like vomiting, have abdominal pain, and experience gastroesophageal reflux. However, medications can be used to relieve the discomfort. If the balloon has a hole or ruptures, the patient's urine or feces will appear blue. After about 6 months of placement, the saline solution and the water balloon are removed using an endoscope. During the 6-month period when the gastric balloon is placed, the patient's food intake will decrease. Doctors will usually provide behavioral therapy, establish exercise habits, etc., to help patients re-cultivate correct living habits to prevent weight gain after the balloon is removed.

Dr. Wang Wei said that the standard course of treatment for intragastric water balloon is 6 months, and the intragastric water balloon can be removed if the patient reaches the weight loss goal ahead of schedule. (Photo provided by Peking University Hospital)

For patients with stage 1 obesity, placement of an intragastric water balloon can reduce total body weight by approximately 10-15% and effectively improve fatty liver. The standard course of intragastric water balloon treatment is 6 months. If the patient reaches the weight loss goal ahead of schedule, the intragastric water balloon can be removed. It can also be repeated according to personal needs. This greatly improves the shortcomings of previous non-surgical treatments that can only rely on the patient's willpower and lack an effective mechanism to control appetite. It is currently the latest non-drug weight loss treatment method.

Intragastric hydroballoon weight loss therapy can achieve phased weight loss goals through more than one intragastric hydroballoon treatment for severely morbidly obese patients with a BMI greater than 37, and morbidly obese patients with a BMI between 32 and 37 and obesity complications. For those who are unable to undergo surgery or have a higher risk of surgery due to obesity, more than one intragastric hydroballoon treatment can be used. For patients with moderate obesity whose BMI is between 27 and 32, or patients with BMI greater than 27 and who also suffer from obesity complications, if they have tried other treatments such as diet, exercise, meal replacements, and medication but have not achieved any results, this also provides a more effective treatment option than before.
