Many women who have had an IUD inserted are particularly worried about having an ectopic pregnancy. We all know that the main purpose of an IUD is contraception, and an ectopic pregnancy is a more harmful ectopic pregnancy. Once intra-abdominal bleeding occurs, it is fatal to both the mother and the fetus, and requires active diagnosis and treatment. So, is the chance of an ectopic pregnancy high after having an IUD inserted?

Ectopic pregnancy refers to the implantation of the fertilized egg outside the uterus, also known as ectopic pregnancy, which is particularly harmful to women, with an incidence rate of about 3-5% of pregnant women. Among them, tubal pregnancy is the most common, accounting for about 95% of ectopic pregnancy, and the incidence rate of ovarian pregnancy is 1:7000-1:50000. In addition, there are abdominal pregnancy and cervical pregnancy, which are usually rare, but both are very dangerous.
It is not easy to have an ectopic pregnancy after the IUD is inserted, but long-term placement may increase the chance of ectopic pregnancy. We know that the role of the IUD is to have a contraceptive effect, and under normal circumstances, the contraceptive rate of the IUD can reach more than 95%, and the chance of pregnancy after the IUD is less than 5%.
Although ectopic pregnancy is serious, it is rare, accounting for only 3-5% of pregnant women. Ectopic pregnancy may also occur after the IUD is inserted. This is because the function of the intrauterine device is not to prevent the combination of sperm and egg in the fallopian tube, but to prevent the fertilized egg from being in various positions in the uterine cavity. This anti-implantation effect has different strengths in different parts of the internal reproductive organs, and it has no effect on pregnancy in the ovaries.
Clinically, ectopic pregnancy with an IUD is more common with ovarian pregnancy, and one of the causes of ectopic pregnancy is the use of an intrauterine device. Therefore, it is not easy to have an ectopic pregnancy with an IUD, but long-term placement may increase the chance of ectopic pregnancy.
