Adenomyosis, also known as intrinsic endometriosis, is a special type of endometriosis in which the endometrium invades the uterine muscle wall. It can coexist with "extrinsic" or mainly pelvic endometriosis. So what are the symptoms of adenomyosis? A gynecologist at Zhengzhou Huashan Hospital said:

1. Dysmenorrhea is the main symptom of adenomyosis. Most of them are secondary dysmenorrhea with progressive aggravation. The degree is severe and painkillers are often needed. As adenomyosis progresses, the pain may start about 1 week before menstruation or extend to 1 to 2 weeks after menstruation. A small number of patients with adenomyosis have pain before and after menstruation, which is still cyclical.

2. Excessive menstruation is another major symptom of uterine bleeding. Among the 318 cases reported by our department, 132 cases had excessive menstruation, accounting for 41.5%. A small number of patients with adenomyosis had heavy bleeding, which was misdiagnosed as functional uterine bleeding before surgery.

3. Infertility occurs in a small number of patients with adenomyosis.

4. Other uterine enlargement is mostly uniform and hard, usually not exceeding 12 weeks of age. Otherwise, it may be combined with uterine fibroids. If it is adenomyosis, it may also show asymmetrical enlargement. If combined with endometriosis, corresponding signs may appear.
