How dangerous is Bartholinitis?

What are the dangers of Bartholinitis? Generally, after the incision and drainage of Bartholinitis, most of the abscess cavities can be completely closed and healed, but fistulas may occasionally form, with a small amount of secretions constantly discharged. When palpated, small and hard nodules can be felt, with slight tenderness, and pus can sometimes flow out of the fistula when squeezed. Therefore, once we have Bartholinitis, we should treat it in time. So what are the dangers of Bartholinitis?

What are the dangers of having Bartholinitis?

History of unclean sexual intercourse, such as having sex with a man who has gonorrhea but has not been completely cured, the gonococci on the glans penis will enter the Bartholin's glands through the duct opening at the vaginal opening; having sex during menstruation can also introduce pathogenic bacteria in the menstrual blood into the duct opening and enter the deep part of the gland, causing inflammation of the gland.

Sometimes the fistula will close or narrow on its own, and pus may accumulate to form an abscess again. It may also recur and not heal for a long time.

In the acute stage, there is local pain and redness and swelling. The pain is most severe when the Bartholin's gland abscess forms. Fever is common, but chills are rare. Sometimes urination and defecation are difficult. Clinical examination can reveal a red, swollen, hard lump in the lower 1/3 of the labia majora, which is obviously tender. If it has developed into an abscess, it is mostly a lump the size of an egg or an apple, and is often unilateral.

If Bartholin's gland abscess is not treated promptly, it may occasionally spread posteriorly, forming a perirectal abscess, and sometimes even rupture into the rectum.
