What is the cause of Bartholinitis

Bartholinitis generally occurs in women of childbearing age. The main pathogens include Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, gonococci and anaerobic bacteria. In recent years, the incidence of Bartholinitis caused by gonococci has been significantly increasing. So what is the cause of Bartholinitis?

The causes of Bartholinitis in women are generally explained by three reasons:

First, childbirth and vaginal surgery may cause bacteria to enter the glands through the wound.

Second, not paying attention to the cleanliness of the vulva. If women often touch their vulva with dirty hands and do not pay attention to good hygiene, such as not washing the vulva every day and not changing underwear frequently, the bacteria can multiply and increase at the vaginal opening and enter the gland through the gland duct opening. This is also the reason why Bartholinitis is more common in unmarried women.

Third, unclean sexual intercourse. When a woman has sex with a man who has gonorrhea and has not been completely cured, the gonococci on the glans of his penis will enter the gland through the opening of the Bartholin's duct at the vaginal opening, causing the bacteria to invade and cause Bartholin's glanditis. Or having sex during menstruation can also press the pathogenic bacteria in the menstrual blood into the opening of the duct and enter the deep part of the gland, causing the disease.

If the Bartholin's gland abscess is not treated in time, it may spread to the posterior side, forming a perirectal abscess, and sometimes even rupture into the rectum. After the abscess is incised and drained, most of the abscess cavities can be completely closed and healed, but fistulas may occasionally form, with a small amount of secretions constantly discharged. A small and hard nodule can be felt during palpation, with slight tenderness, and pus can sometimes flow out of the fistula when squeezed.
