The cause of Bartholinitis is complex

The Bartholin's glands are located at the lower part of the labia majora, one on each side, and the gland ducts open on the inner side of the lower part of the labia minora on both sides of the vaginal opening. Due to the characteristics of this anatomical part, when the vulva is contaminated during sexual intercourse, childbirth, and other situations, pathogens can easily invade the glands and cause Bartholin's gland inflammation. The following is a detailed introduction to the causes of Bartholin's gland inflammation.

(I) Causes of the disease The Bartholin's glands are located in the deep 1/3 of the labia majora on both sides, and the gland duct opens between the hymen and the labia minora. Due to the characteristics of the anatomical location, pathogens can easily invade and cause Bartholin's glanditis when the vulva is contaminated during sexual intercourse, childbirth, or other situations. When the Bartholin's glands are infected, the gland ducts are often affected first, and the gland duct openings are blocked due to inflammation, congestion, and edema. The secretions and exudates are difficult to discharge, which can form Bartholin's gland abscesses.

(II) Pathogenesis This disease is often a mixed infection with complex pathogens. The main pathogens are endogenous pathogens and pathogens of sexually transmitted diseases. In China, they are mostly Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. In foreign countries and some areas in China, Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the main cause. It can also be caused by anaerobic bacteria (including Bacteroides).

【Etiology】

Bartholinitis usually occurs in the reproductive age group, rarely in infants and after menopause. The pathogens are mostly Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus and Enterococcus, and a few are gonococci.
