Anovulatory functional uterine bleeding can be divided into two groups according to age.

Functional uterine bleeding, also known as DUB, is a common gynecological disease that refers to abnormal uterine bleeding. After examination, no organic lesions of the whole body or reproductive organs were found, but it was caused by dysfunction of the neuroendocrine system. Patients show irregular menstrual cycles, excessive menstrual flow, prolonged menstrual periods or irregular bleeding. Anovulatory DUB is one of the types, which can be divided into the following two groups according to age:

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding during puberty

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding in adolescence occurs in girls after menarche. It is caused by the immaturity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian-uterine axis and the inability to establish regular ovulation. The clinical manifestations of patients with Dysfunctional uterine bleeding in adolescence are: infrequent menstruation after menarche, irregular menorrhagia after a short period of amenorrhea, prolonged menstruation, continuous bleeding, and severe anemia.

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding during menopause

Menopausal functional uterine bleeding refers to the functional uterine bleeding of women aged ≥40 years and before and after menopause, during which the incidence of anovulatory functional uterine bleeding increases year by year. The clinical manifestations of menopausal functional uterine bleeding are: frequent menstruation, irregular cycles, excessive menstrual flow, and prolonged menstruation. 10%-15% of patients present with severe irregular menstruation, metrorrhagia, and severe anemia. Endometrial biopsy often shows varying degrees of endometrial hyperplasia, so curettage is necessary, and special attention should be paid to excluding non-functional uterine bleeding caused by gynecological tumors (uterine fibroids, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer).
