The types of uterine fibroids vary according to where they grow

Based on the different locations where the fibroids grow in the uterus, uterine fibroids are clinically divided into the following four common types.

1. Intramural fibroids

Intramural fibroids are mostly located in the uterine muscle wall and are surrounded by the myometrium. They are more common in the early stages of uterine fibroids. According to statistics, 60%-70% of patients with uterine fibroids who visit the doctor for the first time are suffering from this type of fibroids.

2. Subserosal fibroids

Subserosal fibroids are formed by the development of intramural fibroids to the serosa. The degree of lesions is more serious than that of intramural fibroids. They often protrude from the surface of the uterus and are in direct contact with the uterine serosa. According to statistics, about 20% of the first visits to the clinic for uterine fibroids are of this type. If the lesions involve the space between the two leaves of the broad ligament of the uterus, they are also called intra-broad ligament fibroids.

3. Submucosal fibroids

If the intramural fibroids grow into the uterine cavity and protrude from the uterine cavity and are in direct contact with the mucosal layer, they are called submucosal fibroids. This type of fibroid can gradually enlarge or even deform the uterine cavity and is connected to the uterus through a pedicle. If the pedicle is long, it will block the cervical opening or protrude from the vagina. According to statistics, 10%-15% of patients with uterine fibroids who visit the doctor for the first time are of this type of fibroids.

4. Cervical fibroids

Cervical fibroids are a relatively rare type of fibroid in clinical practice. The fibroids mainly grow in the cervix of the uterus, and because of their low growth location, they are often embedded in the pelvic cavity, causing local compression symptoms in patients.
