Why does cervical erosion affect pregnancy?

Cervical erosion is not a disease, but a manifestation of chronic cervicitis. When women have pathological inflammatory cervical erosion, it will not only cause abnormal leucorrhea, vaginal bleeding, pelvic inflammation, but may also have a certain impact on the ability to conceive.

The cervix protrudes into the vagina and contains glands that secrete cervical mucus. Cervical mucus is composed of two parts: mucin and water-soluble components. The properties and amount of cervical mucus are affected by ovarian function and show obvious cyclical changes. During the ovulation period, due to the dominance of estrogen, the water content in the mucus increases, the mucus becomes thinner, and the gaps are sufficient for sperm to pass through; during the luteal phase, due to the dominance of progesterone, the water content of the mucus decreases, the mucus becomes viscous, and it is not conducive to the passage of sperm.

When women have cervical erosion, the physical and chemical properties of cervical mucus change significantly, containing more white blood cells and the pH value of mucus is alkaline. When sperm passes through the cervix, not only does the inflammatory microenvironment of the cervix reduce the vitality of sperm, the viscous secretions make it difficult for sperm to pass through, the inflammatory secretions are toxic to sperm, causing sperm to consume too much energy and shorten their lifespan, but also a large number of sperm are phagocytosed by inflammatory cells and destroyed by bacteria and their toxins. Escherichia coli has a strong agglutination effect on sperm, causing sperm to lose vitality, which ultimately increases the difficulty of conception.
