Can uterine fibroids become cancerous?

Most uterine fibroids are benign, but in rare cases they may become cancerous. Rapidly growing fibroids require special attention.

Uterine fibroids are common benign tumors in the female reproductive organs, mostly formed by abnormal proliferation of uterine smooth muscle cells. In most cases, they are not life-threatening. However, they have a high incidence rate and may be accompanied by uncomfortable symptoms, such as abnormal menstruation, abdominal distension, etc. In severe cases, they may also affect fertility. When many women hear the word "tumor", they will inevitably think of cancer. Although the probability of uterine fibroids becoming cancerous is very low, it is indeed not to be ignored.

The risk of uterine fibroids becoming cancerous is related to multiple factors, such as older age, rapid growth of the fibroids, or a larger initial size of the fibroids, all of which may increase the possibility of malignant transformation. Specific manifestations may include enlargement of the mass in a short period of time, abnormal bleeding outside of menstruation, and persistent pelvic pain. Once malignant transformation occurs, it usually manifests as uterine leiomyosarcoma, a highly invasive malignant tumor that often requires surgery and subsequent comprehensive treatment.

In order to reduce the risk and detect abnormalities in time, it is recommended to have regular gynecological ultrasound examinations, especially for women with larger fibroids. If the above symptoms of suspected malignancy appear, you should see a doctor as soon as possible for further examination. You can also reduce the possibility of uterine fibroid hyperplasia by improving your daily lifestyle, such as healthy eating and proper exercise to regulate your weight and hormone levels.
