Prevent dementia, fight depression, prevent osteoporosis... Curcumin works wonders when taken this way!

When it comes to the benefits of eating turmeric, people will think of its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, liver protection, and pain relief effects. According to new research, curcumin in turmeric may improve people’s memory by nearly 30% and relieve depression, adding several more benefits to eating turmeric!

Previous studies have found that Alzheimer's patients often have accumulation of beta-amyloid protein in their brains to form "plaques." As beta-amyloid protein gradually accumulates, it will continue to damage the function of nerve cells and even cause atrophy of the brain structure, leading to memory loss. Australian scientists have discovered that by using curcumin in turmeric as a colorimetric agent, beta-amyloid plaques can be observed in the retina; in the future, it may be possible to diagnose Alzheimer's disease early through a simple eye examination.

Study: Taking curcumin can help improve memory

The British Daily Mail reported that Dr. Gary Small of the University of California, Los Angeles conducted experiments to understand the effects of curcumin on normal people's memory and its potential effects on symptoms such as brain plaques and neural tangles in the brains of Alzheimer's patients.

The researchers analyzed 40 people between the ages of 50 and 90 who were given either 90 mg of curcumin or a placebo daily for 18 months. During the study, participants' heart rhythm, thyroid function, and overall health were assessed every 3 months. A study of 30 participants who underwent brain scans showed that taking curcumin for 18 months improved people's memory by 28%. In addition, curcumin also improved their attention span.

Dr. Small said that the experimental results show that the use of relatively safe curcumin can help improve memory and promote mental health. The study was published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.

Study: Taking turmeric supplements may help prevent osteoporosis

A study from the University of Genoa last May also found that taking turmeric supplements can increase bone density by 7 percentage points in 6 months. Although curcumin has many benefits, it is important to avoid excessive intake. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are still certain limits on turmeric intake. It is recommended that adults should control their intake to 0-3 mg per kilogram of body weight, and it is safer not to exceed 200 mg per day. Curcumin, like beta-carotene and lycopene, is a fat-soluble nutrient. Therefore, if you add an appropriate amount of oil when cooking or eating, it can help the human body absorb it more effectively.
