Although the ketogenic diet is based on meat, you can also consume foods that are lower in sugar. For example, foods that are also protein sources like meat include fish and shellfish, eggs, soybeans or soy products (tofu, natto, boiled soybeans, handmade soy milk). These protein sources contain a balanced amount of essential amino acids, which the human body cannot synthesize on its own, and essential fatty acids, which the human body cannot synthesize on its own.

You can also get protein from beans other than soybeans, such as black beans or chickpeas, but you must be extra careful because they contain a lot of sugar. One tablespoon of boiled soybeans contains only 0.3 grams of sugar, but the same tablespoon of black beans contains 2.0 grams and chickpeas contain 2.2 grams. In addition, it is best to choose sugar-free handmade soy milk, because canned and aluminum foil-wrapped soy milk not only has a high sugar content, but also contains many additives.

Although fresh milk and dairy products are also sources of protein, fresh milk or yogurt contain a lot of sugar, and some people may be allergic to them, so I personally do not recommend them. Low-sugar dairy products include cheese and cream, but both of these foods are high in calories, so you should also pay attention to the amount you consume.

Don’t underestimate the sugar content in processed foods and seasonings

Foods that can provide vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber include vegetables, seaweed and mushrooms with low sugar content. Vegetables with low sugar content include leafy vegetables such as spinach, komatsuna, lettuce, and royal greens, as well as broccoli, cauliflower, celery, red pepper, yellow pepper, and cabbage; although onions, tomatoes, carrots, and garlic are vegetables with high nutritional value, they contain relatively high sugar content, so do not consume them in excess.

Seaweed includes kelp, nori, seaweed, agar, etc. Mushrooms include shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, etc. These are foods with low sugar content, but processed foods seasoned or stewed with sugar should still be avoided as much as possible.

Among alcoholic beverages, distilled liquors such as shochu, whiskey, and vodka have low sugar content and can therefore be consumed in moderation. These distilled spirits have virtually zero sugar, but you should still avoid cocktails mixed with sweetened carbonated drinks or fruit juices.

As for seasonings, vegetable oils such as olive oil or sesame oil, salt, pepper, vinegar, mayonnaise, etc. are all low-sugar seasonings. As for sauces that contain sugar, such as ketchup, oyster sauce, mirin, barbecue sauce, etc., please try to avoid them as they contain high levels of sugar.

To summarize the above key points, the foods in the following list that are low in sugar are all foods that should be consumed on the ketogenic diet.
