Are you facing the contradiction that is hindering your weight loss? Is it possible to avoid sugary drinks? Dr. Ma Wenya helps you find your weight loss blind spots

Isn’t losing weight just about eating less and exercising more? Why is it easier said than done? Because the problem behind the problem is the real problem. Even being gentle, kind, respectful, frugal and modest can make people fat! In her new book "Don't Lose Weight, What You Need is "Regain Weight Loss": Endocrinologists Use Reverse Thinking to Get You Back to Your Original Settings", Dr. Ma Wenya from the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism will conduct a merciless soul-searching on you, reveal the facts that you are most reluctant to admit, expose the lies you tell yourself, and lead you back to the original settings that best suit you.

Dr. Ma Wenya said that since she wrote "Happily Thin: No Dieting, No Gaining Weight, 23 Healing Weight-Loss Dialogues Starting from the Heart" two years ago, her clinic has seen a significant increase in first-time visits for weight-loss consultations, including patients whose weight has reached the so-called morbid obesity. Some patients have even developed metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes due to obesity.

Of course, there are also many people who are like the girl Xiao Fu described in the book. They need to love themselves first before they can be happy and thin. But there are also many friends who I don’t want to call patients, because strictly speaking, these cases who come to see me for weight problems do not meet the definition of a disease. To a certain extent, they may not necessarily need to lose weight, they just need to clarify whether they really want to lose weight, why they want to lose weight, and how to manage their weight.

When it comes to weight loss today, the most encouraging thing is that, thanks to medical knowledge about the pathogenesis of obesity and the breakthroughs in the development of various drugs, we can now help patients who want to lose weight achieve their goals through a variety of methods, so that they can live healthier and more confidently. But I have also observed that when it comes to losing weight, many people have all sorts of puzzling and contradictory behaviors, whether conscious or unconscious. These contradictory behaviors are common and not only hinder the successful achievement of weight loss goals, but may also cause patients to gain weight again, throwing away the hard-earned results, just like Sisyphus pushing a stone in vain.

When I continued to inquire, I unexpectedly discovered that behind the failure of weight loss often lies a fact: many people are not as eager to change as they appear to be. This discovery aroused my curiosity, and I wanted to try to dig out the truths that we are unwilling to face in a more incisive way.

The sweetness in life

Once, I asked a female patient who came to the outpatient clinic to lose weight: "Do you drink sugary drinks?" She said yes.

I asked her, “Is it okay not to do that?”

She replied, "But... is it not okay at all? I need that little bit of sweetness every day." (Please note that I only asked her if it was okay. She didn't say yes or no. She thought I said it was not okay at all. Did you notice?)

So I asked her, “Is your life hard?”

She was stunned for a moment, as if she was hit hard by these words.

If life is not bitter, why does it need sweetness? If life is sweet enough, why do we need more sweetness?

I once asked my son why he was able to lose nearly 10 kilograms in one year (I swear to God, my son's weight loss had nothing to do with me, I didn't force him to do anything). His answer was that if he did what he loved, he would naturally lose weight.

I thought about his answer carefully and found it made a lot of sense. After comparing the patients in my outpatient clinic, I found that people who need to lose weight often treat themselves badly first and then compensate with food. Because they have suffered first, they need to "return to sweetness." And going on a diet to lose weight makes you feel deprived of the little sweetness in life again, which is even more bitter. If you don't like exercise, but force yourself to exercise, isn't that making it even more miserable? Not being able to lose weight or gaining weight again is a reasonable result, isn’t it?

People who are more defensive even have a look on their faces saying, why lose weight? No one can deprive me of my right to eat!

Because eating = happiness

Because the heart is bitter, the tongue needs sweetness.

Sweet = sweet on the tongue

If you are willing, you will probably be willing

Trust Your Satisfaction from the Inside Out

Can you tell everyone in the world, including yourself, that you actually eat a lot and feel very full?

No matter how much or how little you eat, tell yourself that you have eaten a lot and enough. Can you do it?

This is a request I made to a patient whose weight increased from 114 kg to 128 kg. Isn't it strange?

Many overweight patients fall into a dilemma: they try desperately to prove to others that they eat less, but still cannot lose weight. Honestly, doing so is futile and often has bad consequences. For example, the other party doesn’t believe it at all, and what’s worse is that you actually believe it.

This is true for many things. The more you need proof, the more you lack it (don't believe it? Look at those couples who try hard to show off their love. Usually, the more they show off, the more fiercely they quarrel in private). On the other hand, if you really want someone to say something fair and prove that you really don’t eat much, the best way is to keep saying that you eat a lot. The other person will then say, how can that be a lot?

People like to prove that they are right. Isn't this better than always saying that you eat very little and then being slapped in the face by others as soon as you eat? Look at those skinny people, don’t they always say that they eat a lot, and then enjoy the envy of others for eating a lot without getting fat. But in fact, who cares whether they eat a lot or a little?

Saying that eating a lot has many benefits

1. You will remember that you have eaten a lot and bring the feeling of fullness into your memory.

2. The feeling of being full, no matter if it is from enough sleep, enough money or enough food, it is just more comfortable (if you are destined to be a fat person in this life, of course it is better to feel better).

3. In reality, eating more or less is often different from feeling like eating more or less. You actually spend less money but feel more satisfied. Isn’t this a good deal?
