Low-calorie tonic for the winter solstice! All-vegetarian hotpot is good for your spleen and stomach

December 22 is the "Winter Solstice" in the lunar calendar. The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital has launched a new health concept of "Medicinal Hot Pot with All Vegetarian Food", which is suitable for the whole family to enjoy together. Chinese medicine practitioners emphasize that one should first regulate the spleen and stomach before taking tonic food and find the medicinal food that suits one's personal constitution. Among the ingredients, one can choose more vegetables, mushrooms, eggs and beans. Not only are they low in calories and non-greasy, they are also a new healthy choice for "winter solstice tonic food."

Warming or cooling tonification diagnosis constitution priority

Dr. Dai Youzhi from the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital said that this winter is very cold, and many people choose to prepare tonic food to fight the cold during the winter solstice. However, not everyone can consume the wide variety of Chinese herbal tonic soups, including the Ten-Ingredient Tonic Soup, ginger duck, medicinal lamb hotpot, tonic wine, sesame oil chicken, and medicinal stewed pork ribs.

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, winter is indeed a good time to “nourish the internal organs.” As stated in the “Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor,” “If one does not store essence in winter, one will surely suffer from a fever in spring.” Winter health care is necessary to reserve vital energy for the coming spring, but everyone has different physical constitutions, so how to nourish the body is a science.

Be careful not to make mistakes in winter, it will hurt your body and your heart

Basically, people with a cold constitution need warm tonic, and those with a hot constitution need cool or neutral tonic. However, for those with Qi deficiency, Yin deficiency, Yang deficiency, damp heat, blood stasis, etc., it is difficult to judge the constitution attributes based on personal experience. In addition, many people have a mixed constitution of cold and hot. If they accidentally take the wrong tonic in winter, it will cause greater harm to their health.

Cold hands and feet: Angelica and Codonopsis to replenish blood

According to traditional Chinese medicine, people with a cold constitution usually suffer from qi deficiency or yang deficiency, and can take supplements in a warmer way. For example, "Codonopsis pilosula" can replenish qi, promote fluid production and nourish blood, while "Cinnamon twig" can warm the meridians and help yang transform qi. People with Qi or Yang deficiency can improve problems such as fatigue, cold hands and feet, and lack of immunity through proper conditioning.

For women with blood deficiency such as irregular menstruation, scanty menstruation, constipation, palpitations, and insomnia, "Danggui" can be added to medicinal food to replenish blood, regulate menstruation and relieve pain, and moisten the intestines and promote bowel movements. Grasping the right time to nourish the body during winter can achieve the effects of warming the meridians, promoting yang, and replenishing both Qi and blood, helping you to escape from the ranks of "iceberg beauties" sooner.

Yin deficiency and dryness and heat, Radix Ophiopogonis nourishes yin and moistens dryness

People who are prone to irritability, dry mouth, and constipation are considered to have a yin deficiency and dryness-heat constitution in traditional Chinese medicine. It is recommended to add Chinese medicinal materials such as Polygonatum odoratum, Ophiopogon japonicus and Dendrobium candidum to the Shiquan Dabu Soup, which has the effects of nourishing yin and moistening the lungs, clearing the heart and relieving restlessness, benefiting the stomach and promoting fluid production, thereby enhancing the nourishing yin and moistening dryness.

【Reminder from Chinese Medicine Practitioners】:

The correct concept of tonic is to adjust according to personal constitution. Whether it is simply taking tonic soup, or adding ingredients to boil into a medicinal soup base, finding a Chinese medicine practitioner to select the right tonic herbs can achieve the effect of health preservation in winter.

【Fuhui Medicinal Hotpot is healthy and has no burden】

Lin Yufang, a nutritionist at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, pointed out that people are accustomed to adding meat, seafood and other non-vegetarian foods to tonic soups during the winter solstice. As a result, not only do they consume too much fat and cholesterol, but because the meat is boiled for too long, it is easy to cause a surge in toxic substances such as nitrite.

【Health Tips】:

When stewing medicinal hotpot, choose vegetables and fruits as the main ingredients and reduce meat consumption. When choosing ingredients, you can select seasonal vegetables and various types of mushrooms that are rich in protein to increase your vegetable intake, so that the whole family can eat healthily without burden.
