Does artificial fructose make you fat? Expert: The same is true for sucrose

The prevalence of obesity in China continues to rise, and many people point the finger at the artificial fructose in shaken drinks, believing that it is slowly absorbed by the human body and easily converted into fat accumulation. However, nutrition experts say that the fructose content of artificial fructose and sucrose is almost the same, and both are "empty calorie" foods. Frequent or excessive intake will lead to obesity and metabolic syndrome, so it is best to drink less.

Hand-cranked cups are high in calories and obesity rates are increasing

According to the latest survey results on the beverage drinking habits of Chinese people by the national online market research website Lifewin, it was found that in the past three months, the proportion of Chinese people who have purchased hand-shaken cup drinks was as high as 67%.

Wu Yingrong, executive director of the Taiwan Nutrition Foundation and assistant professor of the Department of Health Nutrition at Taipei Medical University, pointed out in a speech at the Obesity Research Society of the Republic of China that the sugar content of these hand-shaken cups can be as high as 10 sugar cubes and the calories can reach 200 calories, which is more than one-tenth of the recommended daily sugar intake. In the long run, it will have side effects such as sugar addiction and obesity.

Sucrose VS high fructose 55 have similar fat-causing effects

The commonly used sweeteners in hand-shaken cups can be divided into two types: sucrose and high fructose corn syrup HFCS 55. Nutritionist Wu Yingrong said that most people believe that the main cause of obesity in China is high fructose syrup HFCS No. 55, and instead choose sucrose which is extracted from natural sugarcane and has a stronger aroma. However, high fructose No. 55 contains 55% fructose and 45% glucose. Compared with sucrose, which contains 50% fructose and 50% glucose respectively, the fructose content is almost the same, and the changes in glucose, leptin, ghrelin, insulin, etc. in the human body are also similar.

Several research papers have shown that pure fructose will increase triglycerides in the blood, reduce insulin sensitivity, affect the concentrations of leptin and ghrelin, and cause symptoms of high uric acid and fatty liver, leading to diseases such as obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Fructose is empty calories, addictive and easy to gain weight

Nutritionist Wu Yingrong said that the sucrose and No. 55 high fructose used in sugary drinks are both "empty calorie" foods, with almost no nutritional value, only high calories. Long-term intake of excessive fructose will activate the appetite center, stimulate the secretion of ghrelin and reduce leptin, making people feel not full, eat more and more, and become addicted to the sweeter fructose, and even convert it into fat, causing obesity.

It is worth noting that honey, which is regarded as a holy health product, consists of 49% fructose and 43% glucose in addition to water. The fructose content is nearly half of that of sucrose and No. 55 high fructose, and its effect on human obesity is similar.

To avoid obesity, nutritionist Wu Yingrong recommends that people should first give up sugary drinks when controlling their weight. If heavy drinkers are not used to it, they can start by reducing the sugar in their drinks and slowly reduce their sugar intake.
