Nutritionists point out that mooncakes can easily contain 300 to 400 calories, especially those filled with lotus seed paste and egg yolk. Zhou Qianqin, a nutritionist at the Linsen Branch of Taipei United Hospital, said that the filling of lotus seed paste and egg yolk mooncakes includes dried lotus seeds that are mashed and steamed, mixed with red bean paste, and salted egg yolks, both of which are high in calories; and the flour, sugar, oil, butter, etc. used to make the cake crust are all calorie bombs. A small mooncake of about 100 grams has a calorie content of 560 calories and more than 30 grams of fat.

If we calculate based on a 60 kg adult jogging at a speed of 145 meters per minute, he or she can burn 60 times 9.4, which equals about 560 calories in one hour. In other words, the distance run in one hour must reach 8,000 meters, which is equivalent to 20 laps around the playground, to burn off the calories of one lotus seed paste mooncake.

Nutritionist Zhou Qianqin pointed out that this is just a simple conversion method. Of course, it will be affected by a person's weight, physical fitness, running speed, etc., but it has shown that the calorie content of mooncakes is astonishing. For those who have metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, chronic disease or are trying to lose weight, it is recommended that they share the food with others instead of eating alone.

Nutritionist Zhou Qianqin further mentioned that in addition to lotus seed paste and egg yolk, the red bean paste mooncakes with jujube paste that are loved by female friends are about 125 grams each and have 375 calories; the common traditional winter melon meat pie is about 85 grams each and has nearly 400 calories; and the mung bean cakes, egg yolk cakes, etc., even a small one has almost 300 calories. If you eat them without restraint, you may gain weight after the Chinese New Year.

If you add barbecue, sugary drinks, etc., the calories will be even more astonishing. It is recommended that everyone eat small amounts and share frequently. When choosing drinks, boiled water should still be the main drink. If you don’t like drinking water, you might as well make a pot of tea to go with the sweet mooncakes. Cassia seed tea, barley tea, herbal tea, etc. are all helpful in removing the greasiness.
