4 big "cylinders" people should do this to avoid thick waist

"Obesity" is a disease! According to a survey by the Taiwan Obesity Medicine Association, nearly half of domestic office workers have a BMI (body mass index) that exceeds the standard, and 1/5 of them have a BMI value of more than 27, showing "obesity"; more than 20% of office workers have waists that are too thick and their bodies tend to be "cylindrical". Doctors remind that if you want to lose weight healthily, it is very important to adjust your eating habits. It is recommended that you reduce high-fat intake, eat more fruits and vegetables, and exercise, which are the important keys to get rid of "cylindrical people". (Video/Photographer Huang Zhiwen)

The survey pointed out that more than 20% of office workers in the country have waists that are too thick and their bodies tend to be "cylindrical".

Lin Wenyuan, secretary general of the Taiwan Obesity Medicine Association, pointed out that they recently conducted a dietary survey on office workers aged 25 to 40 across Taiwan and found that most Taiwanese office workers eat out and prefer stir-frying, frying, and deep-frying as their main cooking methods. Coupled with their habit of eating snacks, nearly 20% of them have excessively large waists. Ms. Zhu, who works as an office clerk in the firm, weighed as much as 110 kilograms 10 years ago. The main cause of her obesity was eating fried chicken every day. Fortunately, she gradually returned to her normal weight through exercise and diet adjustments.

Eating until 90% full can lead to obesity

The survey also found that as many as 34% of office workers eat more than 90% full at each meal, and half of office workers are accustomed to having afternoon tea or midnight snacks on average about every three days. Nearly 30% of office workers habitually eat multiple meals a day. The 25-year-old man surnamed Kong loves to eat braised pork rice. He can eat 4 bowls in one meal and 5 meals a day. His current weight is as high as 130 kilograms, and it is difficult for him to even have a girlfriend.

Doctors have found that foods high in starch, fat and sugar are most popular among office workers, and they are also accustomed to pairing meals with sugary drinks, which are the reasons why office workers become obese. If the average height of a 30-year-old Taiwanese male is 172 cm and weight is 68 kg, and he consumes 3,900 calories a day, which is about 4.5 pork chop bento boxes sold in convenience stores, he may gain 3 to 6 kg in a single month.

This survey gradually classified office workers into four obese "cylindrical groups" based on their dietary preferences, and "proper diet + exercise + reducing fat absorption" are definitely the three major factors for healthy weight loss. Therefore, it is important to effectively control dietary calories, reduce unnecessary fat absorption, and try to eliminate the "fat" in the abdomen to avoid the occurrence of obesity complications.

1. "Oily vegetarians": They mostly eat processed vegetarian food, which is cooked with high oil content.

Recommendation: Eat less processed vegetarian products, focus on whole grains and root vegetables that are not refined or processed, and avoid frying or stir-frying with too much vegetable oil.

2. "Carnivorous Tyrannosaurus": They hardly eat vegetables, and their favorite foods are chicken fillets and fried chicken. More than 20% of them have an obese BMI.

Recommendation: It is better to eat lean meat, fish or beef. When cooking, boil or steam them instead of stir-frying or frying.

3. Sweets fanatic: Eat sweets at least 3 days a week. 44% of this group have an overweight BMI, and 22% of women have a waist circumference of more than 80 cm.

Recommendation: People who love sweets should reduce their intake of starch and sugar, and replace desserts with fresh fruits and vegetables.

4. "Starch excess group": Starchy staple foods are cooked with high-fat methods such as stir-frying, frying and deep-frying. 32% of the BMI values indicate obesity.

Recommendation: Try to choose foods containing resistant starch, such as sweet potatoes, potatoes, brown rice, beans, etc. to reduce the intake of fat calories.
