How big is an ovarian cyst that requires surgery?

How big does an ovarian cyst usually need to be to undergo surgery?

1. The normal size of adult ovaries: the length is 2.93cm on the left and 2.88cm on the right; the width is 1.48cm on the left and 1.38cm on the right; the thickness is 0.82cm on the left and 0.83cm on the right; the weight of the ovaries is 3-4g. The ovaries begin to shrink gradually at the age of 35-45, and after menopause, the ovaries can gradually shrink to 1/100% of their original size.

2. Physiological ovarian cysts are the most common ovarian cysts, which usually occur in women of childbearing age during the ovulation period. An abnormal amount of fluid accumulates in the follicles or corpus luteum, forming follicular cysts or corpus luteum cysts. This type of cyst is sometimes larger, but regardless of whether medication is used, it will generally disappear automatically within three months.

3. Women with physiological ovarian cysts should closely follow up the cysts. If the cysts shrink or do not increase after 4-6 weeks, they should be followed up for one month. If the cysts continue to increase, especially those larger than 5 cm, they should be surgically explored. Each follow-up should be done after the menstruation is over and the bladder is emptied. Pay attention to nutrition. If a laparotomy is performed, liquid food should be taken 6 hours after the operation, and semi-solid food or normal food should be taken after the gas is exhausted. If physiological cysts continue to increase excessively, surgery is also required.

4. Pathological ovarian cysts can cause dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, irregular menstruation and other symptoms. For patients with a diameter less than 5 cm, medication can be used to treat the disease. For patients with a diameter greater than 5 cm, salpingo-oophorectomy, ovarian cystectomy, adnexectomy and total hysterectomy can be performed.
