Do menopausal women need contraception?

As living standards continue to improve, the menopause of many women is also being postponed. During menopause, although the ovaries cannot ovulate on schedule, and there will be menstrual disorders and decreased fertility, ovulation will occasionally occur. In other words, menopausal women still have the possibility of pregnancy, so contraception still needs to be adhered to during menopause.

Should I remove the IUD after menopause?

Studies have shown that the use of stainless steel ring contraceptive devices is usually about 20 years. Generally speaking, the intrauterine device can be removed after menopause, and it is best to remove it within one year after menopause. If it is too long, it will be difficult to remove the ring. Of course, if there is no special discomfort, there is no need to force the ring to be removed.

Ovaries - the root of menopause

As women age, the number of eggs in their ovaries decreases, and the ovaries themselves begin to undergo various changes, showing abnormal conditions such as significant epithelial hyperplasia, deep pits and cysts, and an increase in pigmented macrophages.

In the premenopausal period, the ovaries of women shrink by about 20% compared with those of sexually mature women; in the late postmenopausal period (2 to 5 years after menopause), the ovaries are only about 1/3 of those of sexually mature women. In other words, the onset of menopause is mainly caused by ovarian aging and the ovaries' failure to respond to gonadotropins. Ovarian aging is closely related to the cessation of menstruation: the earlier the ovaries age, the earlier the menopause occurs; the slower the ovarian aging, the later the menopause.
