What are the causes of external itching?

Vulvar pruritus is a common vulvar disease in women, mainly referring to the itching of the clitoris, labia minora, labia majora, perineum, and perianal area. It manifests as unbearable itching and pain, which is paroxysmal or persistent, lighter during the day and heavier at night. It seriously affects the patient's daily life and study. So what are the causes of exogenous itching?

1. Local causes

(1) Special infections: Fungal vaginitis and trichomonas vaginitis are the most common. Pubic lice and scabies can cause itching. Itching around the anus and vulva of young girls is mostly caused by pinworms, which usually occur at night;

(2) White lesions of the vulva: also known as chronic vulvar dystrophy, with white patches on the vulva and itching as the main symptoms;

(3) Drug allergy and chemical stimulation: soap, Sanisol, contraceptive devices, sanitary napkins, nylon pants and other chemical fiber fabrics can cause contact dermatitis and itching;

(4) Irritating vaginal discharge irritates vulvar pain and itching: such as senile vaginitis, cervical erosion, cervical polyps, irritation from oral fluid, diabetes, cystitis, aminuria of pyelonephritis, urinary incontinence, diabetes, etc.

(5) Skin diseases of the vulva: lichen planus, chronic eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, abrasions, tinea cruris, etc.;

(6) Bad hygiene habits: If you do not pay attention to the cleanliness of the vulva, vaginal secretions, menstrual blood, urine, sweat stains and other dirt will accumulate, causing local itching.

2. Systemic causes

(1) Vulvar itching caused by diabetes, jaundice, vitamin A and B deficiency, anemia, leukemia, etc.

(2) Localized congestion of the vulva during pregnancy and premenstrual period may lead to vulvar itching;

(3) Unexplained vulvar pain and itching. It is currently believed that it may be related to psychological factors.

When making a diagnosis, the patient's medical history and treatment process should be inquired in detail, and a careful systemic and local examination should be performed. If necessary, vaginal secretion culture, drug sensitivity test or local pathological examination should be performed.
