What are the causes of bacterial vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis is one of the most common gynecological diseases. If not treated in time, it can lead to miscarriage or premature birth, which is extremely dangerous. Because the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis are very similar to the clinical manifestations of cervical cancer caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Once similar symptoms appear, you should go to the hospital for examination as soon as possible. Gynecologists can distinguish between bacterial vaginosis and cervical cancer through cervical smears.

Cause 1: Smoking

There is sufficient scientific evidence that women who smoke are at a much higher risk of developing Bacterial Vaginosis than women who do not smoke. The chemical components contained in cigarettes will reduce the number of lactic acid bacteria in the female vagina that have a balanced protective effect, thus giving the pathogenic bacteria of Bacterial Vaginosis a chance to multiply in large numbers, leading to infection. Preventive measures: The most thorough solution is to quit smoking.

Cause 2: Intrauterine contraceptive device

The risk of placing an intrauterine device is that a large number of bacteria may enter the uterus through the capillaries around the device, changing the bacterial balance in the uterus and vagina, and eventually leading to bacterial vaginosis. Preventive measures: About 1/3 of patients with bacterial vaginosis who have an intrauterine device will relapse within 6 months after recovery. If this happens, the doctor will ask you to take antifungal drugs or recommend you to choose other contraceptive methods.

Cause 3: Improper cleaning methods

Researchers have found that if the daily cleaning method is not chosen properly, it may lead to a large reduction in the lactic acid bacteria that maintain the balance of the uterus and vaginal environment. Not only will it fail to promote health, but it will increase the incidence of gynecological diseases, especially bacterial vaginosis.

Precautions: Do not clean the vagina too frequently. It is normal for women to have a small amount of secretions in their private parts, and these secretions are not as dirty as we think. It is these secretions that maintain the pH balance in the vagina. If you are worried about the odor in your private parts, you can choose cotton underwear that is highly absorbent and breathable, and change and wash them frequently to keep your private parts dry.
