What is a chocolate cyst?

1. Chocolate cyst is a lump, but not a tumor. It is a pathological change of endometriosis. Under normal circumstances, the endometrium grows in the uterine cavity and is affected by female hormones in the body. It sheds once a month to form menstruation. If endometrial fragments fall off during menstruation, they enter the pelvic cavity through the fallopian tubes and implant on the surface of the ovaries or other parts of the pelvic cavity, forming ectopic cysts.

2. Ectopic endometrium is also affected by sex hormones. It sheds and bleeds repeatedly during the menstrual cycle. For example, if there is ovarian disease, local bleeding occurs during each menstrual period, which enlarges the ovary and forms a cyst containing old blood. The old blood is brown and sticky like paste, like chocolate, so it is also called chocolate cyst. This cyst can gradually increase in size and sometimes rupture during or after menstruation, but rarely undergoes malignant changes.

3. Chocolate cysts: Endometrial-like tissue can be seen under hysteroscopy. It is called chocolate cysts because the old blood stasis retained in this cyst is the color of chocolate paste. Although this disease only sees small cysts at the beginning, if you do not pay attention to treatment or insist on taking medicine for a long time, you will have severe abdominal pain before and after each menstruation.

4. Due to endometriosis, patients will experience menstrual-like changes such as periodic congestion, bleeding, and abscission under the influence of ovarian hormones, which is also called ovarian endometriosis.
