Understanding Chocolate Cysts

What is a chocolate cyst? Understanding this is necessary for correct treatment. Regarding what a chocolate cyst is, experts explain that it is a gynecological disease. Don't be fooled by the name and think it is something delicious. Next, we will give a detailed interpretation of what a chocolate cyst is.

Chocolate cysts can be seen with endometrial tissue under hysteroscopy. Because the old blood stasis in the cysts is the color of chocolate paste, it is called "chocolate cysts". Although this disease only has small cysts at the beginning, if treatment is delayed for a long time or medication is not taken, there will be severe abdominal pain before and after each menstruation. Most patients have ectopic endometrial tissue, which, under the influence of ovarian hormones, undergoes menstrual-like changes such as periodic congestion, bleeding and exfoliation, so it is also called "ovarian endometriosis".

Chocolate cysts are "lumps" but not "tumors". They are a type of endometriosis. Under normal circumstances, the endometrium grows in the uterine cavity and is affected by female hormones in the body. It sheds once a month to form menstruation. If the endometrial fragments shed during menstruation flow backward through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic cavity with menstrual blood, they will be implanted on the surface of the ovaries or other parts of the pelvic cavity, forming ectopic cysts.

This ectopic endometrium is also affected by sex hormones and sheds and bleeds repeatedly during the menstrual cycle. If the lesion occurs on the ovary, there will be local bleeding during each menstrual period, which will enlarge the ovary and form a cyst containing old blood. This old blood is brown and sticky like paste, similar to chocolate, so it is also called "chocolate cyst". This cyst can gradually increase in size and sometimes rupture during or after menstruation, but rarely becomes malignant.
