The incidence of cervical erosion is related to estrogen levels

Cervical erosion can be divided into two types: congenital erosion and acquired erosion, and the causes of both are related to estrogen levels.

1. Congenital cervical erosion

Congenital cervical erosion often occurs during fetal development. Normally, when the embryo develops to the third or fourth month, the cylindrical epithelium in the cervical canal and the squamous epithelium on the surface of the cervical vagina can be clearly distinguished. The junction of these two types of epithelial tissues is not the cervical os, but is located in the cervical canal. When the embryo develops to the sixth to seventh month, the columnar epithelium of the cervix already has secretory function.

In the late pregnancy, if these cervical mucosal columnar epithelium proliferates under the influence of maternal estrogen and grows outside the cervical os, or even beyond the external cervical os, congenital cervical erosion will occur. This situation is not uncommon. According to statistics, about one-third of newborn girls have this disease. As long as good care is taken to avoid adverse stimulation such as lacerations or infections, it can generally recover on its own without special treatment.

2. Acquired cervical erosion

Acquired cervical erosion is relative to congenital cervical erosion. It mostly occurs in women of childbearing age when their ovaries are active. It is related to the estrogen produced by the ovaries stimulating the columnar epithelium of the cervical canal and causing excessive proliferation. If not properly cared for, it is likely to induce inflammatory infection. Moreover, the inflammation occurs on the basis of erosion and is not the cause of the erosion.
