The value of ultrasound examination of uterine fibroids

Uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumor of the female reproductive system. Most of them are asymptomatic. Some patients may experience vaginal bleeding, abdominal masses, and compression symptoms. Early diagnosis and early treatment are very important, and ultrasound plays an important role in diagnosing uterine fibroids.

The morphology and structure of human tissues are different. After ultrasound enters the human body, the degree of reflection, refraction and absorption of ultrasound waves by various tissues and organs is also different. Clinicians can use a combination of anatomical and pathological knowledge to determine whether there is a lesion in the examination area. For patients with uterine fibroids, ultrasound can show the location, size, number of fibroids, and whether the fibroids are uniform or liquefied cystic. It can also observe whether the fibroids compress other surrounding organs.

Ultrasound scanning of fibroids can show three basic changes: weak echo, equal echo, and strong echo. The weak echo type has a high cell density, more elastic fibers, relatively abundant blood vessels, and is mainly arranged in nests. The strong echo type has a higher content of collagen fibers, and tumor cells are mainly arranged in bundles. The equal echo type is between the weak echo and the strong echo. When the fibroid degenerates, the acoustic penetration is enhanced; when the fibroid becomes malignant, the necrotic area increases and the echo inside is disordered.

In short, ultrasound examination can not only help diagnose uterine fibroids and distinguish whether the fibroids are degenerating, but also help to differentiate ovarian tumors and other pelvic masses. The accuracy rate of diagnosing fibroids can reach over 90%.
