There are 2 types of enzymes: digestive enzymes vs metabolic enzymes

Generally speaking, there are two types of enzymes in the human body: "digestive enzymes" and "metabolic enzymes". There is a certain amount of enzymes in the body, each has its own function, and they do not compete with each other because they are distributed differently and perform different biochemical functions. But what is the difference? How to supplement it? Nutritionist Chen Ruozhen has further explanation below:

1. Metabolic enzymes

Metabolic enzymes, also known as "metabolic enzymes", mainly exist at the cellular level and participate in the biochemical catalytic reaction of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production. They are enzymes required to execute life phenomena reactions such as heartbeat, breathing, metabolism and thinking. Metabolic enzymes can be divided into six major categories based on the type of reaction they catalyze, including: oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, lyases, isomerases and conjugations.

Metabolic enzymes cannot be directly ingested from ordinary food, but you can take in more nutrients related to energy metabolism, such as B vitamins and minerals zinc, copper and manganese, to help the body maintain good metabolic function.

  • Vitamin B group: Its physiological function is to act as a coenzyme, working together with metabolic enzymes in cells to enable chemical reactions in cells and participate in energy metabolism. Beans, fish, meat, eggs, whole grains, root vegetables and some dark green leafy vegetables are rich food sources of B vitamins.

  • Zinc, copper and manganese: participate in the activation of antioxidant enzymes in cells and have the ability to eliminate cellular free radicals. Zinc and copper can be obtained from meat and whole grains; manganese can be supplemented from whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and dark green vegetables.

2. Digestive enzymes

Digestive enzymes exist in the digestive fluid outside the body's tissues, and can help break down the three major nutrients - carbohydrates, proteins and fats. The broken down small molecules can then be absorbed and utilized by the cells of the small intestine. Common types of digestive enzymes include amylase, disaccharidase, trypsin and pancreatic lipase.

Unlike metabolic enzymes that cannot be supplemented from food, digestive enzymes can be supplemented from fresh fruits. The more well-known ones are: pineapple, papaya and kiwifruit. They each have bromelain, papain and actinidin, which all contain digestive enzymes that can help break down proteins and are plant-based protein-degrading enzymes.

  • Bromelain: Pineapple fruits and stems contain bromelain (bromelain). The pH value of bromelain in the stem is alkaline, while the enzyme in the fruit is acidic. It, papaya enzyme, and kiwi enzyme can all be used to tenderize meat. In the digestive tract, it can effectively break down protein and release amino acids for rapid absorption by the human body.   • Papaya enzyme: exists in papaya latex, and gradually loses its activity at 55°C. The best state for the enzyme to decompose protein is when the temperature is between 35 and 45°C and the pH value is between 7 and 8 (weakly alkaline). Green papaya contains more enzymes than ripe papaya. In addition to breaking down protein, it also contains papaya lipase, which breaks down fat. For people with insufficient pancreatic lipase secretion, papaya enzyme can be appropriately supplemented.

  • Kiwi enzyme: Foreign studies have shown that kiwi enzyme can improve diarrhea and constipation. It is recommended to consume fresh kiwi 30 minutes after a meal, which can help break down meat protein and reduce irritation for those with gastrointestinal discomfort. However, pineapple and papaya are medium GI fruits, and kiwifruit with a lower GI is not easy to control blood sugar. Therefore, diabetic patients should pay special attention to controlling the portion when eating, and not eat too much at once. In addition, pineapple, papaya and kiwi fruit are high in potassium, and patients with poor renal function should also consume them in moderation.
