Are there any signs that young people today are gradually gaining weight? The Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior recently published a new study from the University of Vermont. The research team found that young students may gain an average of about 10 pounds, or 4.55 kilograms, over the four years of college. In the study, the authors recruited 117 college freshmen as subjects and continued to follow up; after four years, the remaining 86 subjects were still participating in the experiment. In the first year of the experiment, the authors measured the body mass index (BMI) of these freshmen four times; and measured it again before the subjects finished their studies four years later. The experimental results showed that the average weight of the subjects in the first year was 147 pounds (about 66.82 kilograms). Four years later, the average weight of the subjects increased to 157 pounds (about 71.36 kilograms). In addition, the proportion of overweight or obese subjects also increased from 23% at the beginning to 41% four years later. The study was published online in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior. This article is from ELSEVIER Global Pharmaceutical News |
