Do teenagers have good teeth strength? May be related to testosterone levels

Bite force seriously affects chewing performance and dietary choices, and therefore becomes an indicator of the functional status of the chewing system. Factors that affect the maximum bite force include age, gender, body shape, craniofacial and maxillomandibular morphology, and dental condition. Previous studies have shown that overweight or obese adolescents have poor physical fitness, and poor physical fitness is positively correlated with bite force. Therefore, the latest article published in the Journal of the Formosan Medical Association explores whether obesity affects the bite force of adolescents.

The test results showed that 292 girls and 285 boys underwent bite force tests and sebum thickness measurements, and their serum testosterone levels, BMI and dental conditions were recorded. The test results show that obese girls have the greatest bite force, while overweight boys have the greatest bite force; in addition, the obesity rate among boys is 14.39%, much higher than the 7.88% among girls. The average testosterone concentration in the serum of girls increased with BMI, but decreased in boys. Therefore, the researchers believe that the serum testosterone concentration is regulated by fat and thus affects the maximum bite force.
