Beauty study: Chubby people live longer than thin people

Modern people prefer a thin and skinny body. Thin people are more popular in the fashion industry and the media. However, are skinny people really healthier than fat people? This is not the case. According to a report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), people with a BMI between 25 and 29.9, which are slightly overweight, have a lower mortality rate than those within the ideal weight range.

Research analysis found that people with a little bit of fat in their bodies will live longer than thin people.

According to a report by the New York Times, a study led by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) analyzed 97 research reports on the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and mortality, with approximately 3 million subjects. The research found that people whose weight ranged from overweight to mildly obese (BMI 25-30) had a 6% lower mortality rate than those with normal weight (BMI 18.5-25); even those with mild obesity (BMI 30-34.9) had a 5% lower mortality rate than those in the ideal weight range.

Although the change in the numbers is not large, it also shows that the method of using body mass index alone as a health indicator in the past may need to be reconsidered, and the standard range of BMI values may need to be re-evaluated. In addition, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, triglycerides, waist circumference, muscle strength and muscle endurance should also be taken into consideration in order to judge the level of physical health. The researchers also pointed out that the location of fat accumulation is the key. For example, fat distributed in the abdomen is more harmful to health. If it is in the subcutaneous fat, thighs and buttocks, it is less harmful. Usually, there will be more muscles, which is beneficial to health.

Dr. Steven Heymsfield of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in the United States believes that if cholesterol is abnormal, weight will affect a person's health, but if other indicators are normal, there is no need to force yourself to lose weight. In addition, overweight people usually discover health problems earlier and receive early treatment, which may be the reason why they live longer.
