Lack of sleep and obesity are common civilization diseases among modern people. High stress in life, lack of exercise and irregular work and rest are the main causes. Recently, foreign scholars have discovered some subtle connections between the two. That is, sleeping less than 8 hours a day can easily cause a person's spleen and stomach to open up, and they compensate by satisfying their appetite, which causes their weight to rise sharply. If you get enough sleep, your chances of gaining weight will decrease. The National Sleep Foundation of the United States recently cited a paper published in The journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism by Uppsala University in Sweden. The experiment involved 12 men in a two-stage process. They were first asked to stay awake for one night and then to sleep well all night. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was then used to observe the stimulation response of the anterior cingulated cortex (ACC) in the brain to food images. The study found that when men are sleep deprived, their brains are relatively more reactive to food. Scientists explain that sleep deprivation activates the "hedonic stimulus" in the right anterior cingulate cortex, inducing the desire to eat constantly. When the subjects conducted self-assessments, they also realized that eating seemed to "compensate" for the psychological depression caused by lack of sleep. The more they ate, the greater their sense of satisfaction, leading to weight loss. Paying attention to diet and exercising are of course the only ways to maintain your body shape, but neither seems to be easier than "getting a good night's sleep"; however, everyone should note that getting enough sleep does not mean you can lose weight, but it reduces the possibility of gaining weight. Generally speaking, it is ideal for adults to maintain 8 hours of sleep a day. |
