Sleeve gastrectomy is currently a very hot topic in the bariatric surgical community and its popularity is clearly increasing. The principle of the operation is quite simple. Part of the original bag-shaped stomach is removed to form a thin sleeve-shaped stomach, thereby reducing the capacity and limiting food intake. Its effect is between gastric bypass and gastric banding, and its safety is also between the two. Therefore, it is a rather "moderate" operation.

Compared with gastric bypass, sleeve resection does not require intestinal reconstruction and anastomosis, so there will be no long-term sequelae such as anemia and osteoporosis caused by vitamin deficiency. In addition, Asians are a group prone to gastric cancer, so regular gastroscopy is a preventive method emphasized by health authorities. After sleeve gastrectomy, a complete gastroscopy can still be performed.

However, after gastric bypass surgery, gastroscopy cannot be used to examine the enlarged stomach. Compared with gastric banding surgery, both are restrictive surgeries, but sleeve gastrectomy does not leave any foreign objects in the human body, so there is no need to worry about potential problems caused by foreign objects in the abdomen.

From this point of view, sleeve gastrectomy seems to be a relatively ideal surgery, but this surgery involves the removal of part of the stomach, which is irreversible. Once the patient regrets it due to changes in the quality of life and diet after the surgery, the original anatomical structure cannot be changed back. Therefore, you must think carefully before undergoing surgery. After sleeve gastrectomy, an average of 50% of excess weight can be lost in the first year after surgery and 60% in the second year.

The weight loss reaches the lowest point in the second to third year and remains there. Some patients will gain a little weight but will not return to their original weight. There is currently no statistical literature covering a period of more than ten years. The mortality rate of this operation is 0.1%, and the complication rate is 3% (including bleeding, anastomotic leakage, wound infection, etc.).

Since sleeve gastrectomy involves cutting of the stomach, diet should be gradually adjusted. The basic principles are the same as the diet after gastric bypass surgery. High-calorie beverages should be completely avoided to avoid undesirable weight loss. Three meals a day should be regular, quantitative, and balanced. Compared with gastric banding surgery, both are restrictive surgeries, but sleeve gastrectomy does not leave any foreign objects in the human body, so there is no need to worry about potential problems that may be caused by foreign objects in the abdomen.
