Traditional Chinese medicine believes that eating raw and cold food will cause stomach cold, which will lead to lung cold or kidney yang deficiency, and women will also suffer from uterine cold. The coldness of the body causes stagnation, which is not conducive to the metabolism of water, causing water to gather and become phlegm, which causes the lungs to fail to descend and result in coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and abdominal distension. The general public may think that Chinese medicine is nitpicking or alarmist, wondering how come so many foreigners are fine after taking it. But the reality is that too many of my patients suffer from hypothyroidism, indigestion, seasonal respiratory allergies, asthma, and obesity because of their superstitious belief in such health concepts.

These patients are of all races, including white, black, yellow and brown. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, mustard greens, white radish, watercress, and kale contain goitrogens, which can inhibit thyroid function and cause goiter. Many green leafy plants contain high amounts of oxalic acid, which can inhibit the absorption of calcium and other minerals and cause stones. After cooking and heating, the goiter will be destroyed and some oxalic acid will be broken down, greatly reducing the harm to the body and making it safer than drinking raw food.

Traditional Chinese medicine calls fat people "people with a lot of phlegm." "Phlegm" blocks the respiratory tract and is the root cause of coughing and asthma. Therefore, avoiding eating raw or cold food and preventing the formation of phlegm is one of the basic concepts of lung care.
